Apprentices build on their talent at TAFE

For the first time ever, seven apprentices in Carpentry and Joinery have started their training at Pilbara TAFE’s Pundulmurra Campus rather then flying to Perth’s metro colleges for their block release.

Pilbara TAFE lecturer Steve Baker says that thanks to a partnership between Bloodwood Tree, Department of Treasury and Finance’s Building Management and Works, and South Metropolitan Youth Link (SMYL) and the college, the apprentices will be able to learn locally while they work in the region.

"It’s very exciting to have this first group here on site at Pundulmurra," said Steve. "They’re keen to learn and determined to get a trade."

"SMYL has been instrumental in getting this program off the ground, and local employers like New Living Project’s Jaxon Group have made a commitment to taking them on for the next few years."

"It’s a real joint effort from all parties in ensuring we’ve got skilled workers for local projects."

Apprentice Alphonse Pungana says he is looking forward to building on the skills he learned in a pre-apprenticeship earlier this year.

"It’s good to be out doors, learning to use new equipment and practising those new skills work," he says.

"All the training and early starts at work are worth it knowing that we’ll have a trade at the end of three years."

Steven Hill from SMYL also has great confidence in the program.

"We’re delighted to have this flagship program start at Pundulmurra," said Steven.

"Local training means less disruption to their lives and their families – and a learning environment that they’re familiar with."

"It’s a positive step for the community, for our apprentices and for local industry, which will be able to draw on a pool of skilled and willing workers."

Steve Baker adds that Pilbara TAFE has plans to build on the Certificate III in Carpentry and Joinery by offering more introductory programs at lower levels which lead into the core apprenticeship course.
