TAFE students rewarded

Pilbara TAFE recognised student achievements in Karratha at an awards presentation evening recently.

In an address to invited guests and students, Pilbara TAFE Managing Director Dr Barry McKnight said the event highlighted the valuable partnership between students, TAFE lecturers, industry, business and government.

“It also involves support from families, partners and friends. Without this partnership framework, it is not possible to get high achieving students and the skills that industry and community need to prosper,” he said.

Dr Barry McKnight said that Pilbara TAFE was the largest training provider in north-west WA and he was committed to retaining that status.

“Like many training organisations in Australia, we have come through a number of lean years in training. Because of the booming economy it has been easy to find a well-paying job, even without skills,” he said.

“It appears that the external economic environment may be changing and it will be skilled workers who will be winning the jobs on offer in the future,” said Dr McKnight.

Dr McKnight acknowledged the valuable support of sponsors Roebourne Shire Council, Karratha Florist, Downer EDI. Civil Road and Rail Pty Ltd and North West Shelf Venture who provided cash prizes for each award.

“Without your support we would not be able to organize such a quality function, let alone reward the winners with such generous prizes. Your sponsorship is greatly appreciated,” he said.

Prizes were awarded to Vocational Student of the Year: Stephanie Coles, Trainee of the Year: Mary Green, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year: Anne Hayes, School VET Student of the Year: Brendan Stannard, Access & Equity Student of the Year: Patricia Starr, Apprentice of the Year: Christine McDonald.
