TAFE welcomes Woodside's Work Ready group

Pilbara TAFE's Minumarghali Mia campus in Roebourne is buzzing with activity, having welcomed 44 participants in Woodside's latest Indigenous Work Ready Program.
Program Manager, Vic Bettesworth, said he was excited at the turnout and anticipated great outcomes for the students.
“This 12-week Work Ready Program has been specifically designed in consultation with Woodside and covers a range of study areas from Engineering, Civil Construction, General Construction, Business, Hospitality and First Aid,” Vic said.
“The students have chosen their area of interest and will receive intensive training to cover the basics and ensure they have a comprehensive overview of the trade, as well as practical skills.”
“For example, the Civil Construction group will learn about Occupational Health and Safety and how to communicate effectively in a work environment, then apply that knowledge as they study practical units in using power tools and carrying out concrete work.”
“Meanwhile, on the other side of the campus, the Hospitality team undertakes training in food preparation and presentation, while the Business team learns how to administer the paperwork in an office-based environment.”
Vic explains that the program doesn't stop there.
“In addition students will learn about controlling and managing their personal finances and take part in leadership and mentoring workshops,” he said.
“Furthermore, before they complete the course, all participants will complete their Blue Card so they're ready for work on site.”
Participants from Karratha, Wickham and Roebourne were selected through an application process run by Woodside, FWW and Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation's employment service provider, Pilbara Joblink.
In anticipation of success, the graduation is planned for late May 2009.
