Move over Picasso!

Move over Picasso, Luke Whatley is coming through!
Since starting the Certificate III in Contemporary Art and Craft at Pilbara TAFE’s South Hedland campus six months ago, Luke’s talent has really blossomed.
More importantly, it’s given the 28 year old, who has cerebral palsy, a whole new lease on life.
"Coming here has been inspirational," says Luke. "I can channel my emotions into my painting and it helps me express myself in different ways. I never thought that I had a hidden talent and now that I realise I do – it’s really awesome!"
Pilbara TAFE Art lecturer, Pam Armstrong, says that Luke is a marvel.
"When he first came here Luke had trouble holding a brush steady," she says. From drawing practice to working with pastels, paints, and inks, each week you can see his technique improve. Now he’s experimenting with water colours and painting abstracts.
Luke credits Pam’s classes with giving him more confidence as well as artistic skills.
"Before I met Pam, I was afraid to pick up a pencil but she changed all that! Painting has given me confidence that filters into everything I do."
Along with the other artists in the group, Luke is planning to display his work at the Pilbara TAFE student art exhibition, opening on Friday November 13th and open daily until student’s graduation night December 9th 2009.
"The exhibition will feature new and upcoming artists from Pilbara TAFE. Not only does the exhibition cover aspects of the course but it gives the students an exciting opportunity to exhibit their final works!" says Pam. "All members of the public are invited to come along for the opening night. Art work will be available for purchase during the exhibition"
"It may be your chance to snare a masterpiece before it’s discovered by the rest of the world!"
