Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) / Skills Recognition

What is Recognition of Prior Learning?

Recognition of Prior Learning is:
  • Evidence of your skills and knowledge for current and past employers
  • A process which can open new opportunities for you
  • The documentation of your skills and knowledge
  • The identification of your skills gaps

The process of RPL involves several methods to gather, measure and assess your skills and knowledge.

Am I eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning?

Do you have any of the following? If you answer Yes, then Recognition of Prior Learning could be for you:

work skills or knowledge

  • trade skills
  • paid or unpaid work experience
  • training of any kind
  • life experience
  • experience in community or volunteer work.

How do my skills get recognised?

  1. Decide on the study area or qualification. (Information on courses can be found on Pilbara TAFE’s website)
  2. Contact Recognition of Prior Learning Coordinator (Rohini Modgill on 9159 6700.)
Apply for Recognition of Prior Learning
  3. Gather evidence for RPL.
  4. Undertake assessment.
  5. Receive a certificate or statement of attainment formally recognising your skills and knowledge

What are the benefits?

When you are seeking employment, you could be asked by potential employers to produce evidence of your knowledge and skills. A formal qualification carries a lot of value in gaining a position of employment.

There are also the added benefits of:

  • Completing your studies in a shorter time
  • Reduced study costs (as well as other associated costs, such as books, child care, etc). There are new subsidies available which were announced in the 2009 State budget
  • A lighter study load, leaving you with time to do other things (e.g. part-time work).
  • Reduction of duplication in learning already gained.
  • Existing skills and knowledge being counted towards your qualification.
  • Enhancement of career path options.
  • Unlocking access to study opportunities
  • Recognising specific skills.

Exemptions/Credit Transfer

Students may be granted credit for the completion of formal accredited learning with a school, university or RTO. If you have academic qualifications, you may wish to apply for an exemption from the relevant Unit Of Competence (ies) within a course or qualification. There are no charges for exemptions. To apply for an exemption, contact your lecturer for assistance to complete an Exemption Application form, which should then be lodged at Client Services.

National Recognition

Most qualifications and courses offered at Pilbara TAFE are nationally recognised. Nationally recognised means that qualifications achieved at Pilbara TAFE have exactly the same value as those with the same national code achieved at other Registered Training Organisations throughout Australia.

Recognition of Overseas Qualifications

Persons seeking recognition of overseas qualifications are advised to contact the Overseas Qualifications Unit of the Department of Education and Training on (08) 9212 0111 or email skill@tiwa.com.au. Details are available from the TAFE International website at www.eti.wa.edu.au
